Slum Survivor

On the 4th - 6th April 36 brave young people and 12 leaders descended on Hitchin Boys School playground to spend the weekend in make-shift accommodation, eating only rice and lentils, cold water and far from the luxuries that we are use to!

Here is what Flo thought about the weekend....

Report From Flo

“We started living in our slum on the day after my 15th birthday and it was a really challenging experience. I think one of the hardest parts was when we had to rebuild our slums because the ‘government’ had knocked them all down to build a sports complex. We had no energy and we were all exhausted, it was freezing cold and beginning to rain. But despite that everyone chipped in to help with building the slums.

Another thing that was particularly hard was the meals. After a weekend of nothing but plain rice, the odd lentil and a spoonful of soup, it really makes you value flavour and tasty food. After the first meal no-one wanted to eat rice for the rest of the weekend but had to because we were so hungry.

I think this experience has taught me to really appreciate everything we have. One night we were read a story of a day in the life of a girl living on the streets She said about how she found chocolate cake the bin of a hotel and she ate like a queen and this really shocked some people in my group including me. How could she be so grateful for so little?”
